Famed Doo-Wop originators of “At The Hop” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll is Here to Stay” on the RBTA stage on April 4, 2009.

The Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts is proud to announce the arrival of famed rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Danny and the Juniors to the RBTA stage for two special performances occurring on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM.

These are the original members of Danny and the Juniors who’s super hit “At The Hop” became a monumental hit on five continents reaching #1 on the pop, country and rhythm and blues charts. It stands today as the #23 all-time biggest record according to The Billboard Magazine List Of #1 Hits. The group immediately followed with another hit, “Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay”, which became an anthem of the era, plus dance classics “Twistin' USA” and “Pony Express”. These were the first of a string of eleven charted recordings.

Danny And The Juniors have made almost fifty American Bandstand appearances and have been on numerous television shows -- from the old Patti Page Big Record Show to Nashville Now. More recently, they've also been featured in three motion pictures and their songs heard in many more. Danny And The Juniors have been covered in many important national publications including Life, Billboard, Cashbox and Teen. The latest of these is a recent USA Today article that points out the broad appeal of Danny And The Juniors and their music across many demographic categories.

Now, in their fifth decade as performers, the group still appears at a multitude of venues including conventions, theatres, clubs, casinos, fairs and festivals. Fall From Grace, Rise To Glory

On Saturday, February 21st at 8:00 PM, the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts is proud to present the debut of the contemporary Gospel themed theatrical production, “Fall From Grace, Rise to Glory” produced by the award winning “All About The Drama” African American Theatre Group of Washington, DC.

Written by Tim Hicks and directed by Ella C. Davis, “Fall From Grace, Rise to Glory” is a contemporary urban "dramedy" that presents the motivational story of the ultimate betrayal, how one man pushed almost to the brink of death finds himself wrestling with his inner demons and questioning God.

An enriching combination of touching scenes, hilarious situations, and inspirational Gospel music will leave any audience breathlessly clinching their seats as they ride along in the storms of life so touchingly shared by the main character James.

RBTA Executive Director Hugo Immediato, Jr., is excited about being the first professional performance venue in the region to showcase a Contemporary Gospel theatrical production. “African-American gospel music in Delaware has a long and rich history of building strong communities with some extraordinary effects. I’m pleased to represent one of the first, if not the first, professional theatrical venue in the region to highlight productions of this nature. Acclaimed romantic comedy written by A.R.Gurney on the RBTA stage just in time for Valentine’s Day.

If you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the special person in your life, then look no further than the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts when they present A.R. Gurney’s acclaimed romantic comedy “Love Letters” on Saturday, February 14th with two performances at 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Love Letters, starring Stacey Fearheiley and Eric C. Peterson, is a hilarious and touching, two-person play about a lifelong friendship, told entirely through letters. From their first scrawled valentines of childhood to their last goodbyes, Melissa and Andrew write their way from grade school through middle age in a play that's just perfect for Valentine's weekend.

The show, under the direction of Fay Jacobs, will star veteran Washington-area performers Stacy Fearheiley and Eric C. Peterson. Fearheiley was seen in Rehoboth last fall in The Vagina Monologues where she had sold-out audiences crying from laughter. Now, the actress will turn her talents to the equally comic, yet also very touching, Love Letters.

Co-star Eric Peterson has been a Rehoboth favorite in both musicals and comedies at the Rehoboth Art League and other venues. Peterson and Fearheiley have a long professional history starring together in both comic and dramatic productions. Among their many credits include Love Letters at the Art League in 1999 and 2005, the production Short & Sweet as well as productions of Lend Me A Tenor, and The Heidi Chronicles.

Director Fay Jacobs theatrical resume includes more than 30 years of professional productions in the Washington, D.C. area and she has directed several productions in Rehoboth and Lewes since 1997.

Doug James, Keith Mack, Ed Shockley and bassist Dennis Michaels perform at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts with a Holiday Twist

If you loved Three Good Friends’ phenomenal show during the Autumn Jazz Fest, make room in your heart for one more as bassist Dennis Michaels joins the dynamic trio Three Good Friends on Friday, December 19th at 8:00 PM at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts at 20 Baltimore Avenue.
Natives Shockley, Mack, and James are three of the most well known and accomplished musicians the Cape region has ever produced. All three grew up in the Lewes-Rehoboth area, where they performed locally. Over time, each moved to Manhattan to pursue their musical careers. Sand, however, being in their shoes, they never lost touch with home.

Ed Shockley led his own regionally-successful band, Jack of Diamonds, in the 80’s. They were featured on numerous TV shows - including the first live simulcast by MTV. His song, “Dodge City,” is still a ‘beach anthem’ to a generation of fans. Ed continued his career in New York as a singer and songwriter, scoring several record deals and appearing on stage and singing on numerous television and radio jingles.

Keith Mack was the lead guitarist and songwriter in the popular 80’s band Scandal, with whom he recorded Platinum and Gold Albums. Keith went on to record and tour with many internationally famous acts, including Paul Young and Joe Cocker - his performance with Cocker in Berlin the night the Berlin Wall came down is just one of his career highlights. Incidentally, Scandal is currently touring and soon to release a new CD.

Doug James is a BMI Award-winning song writer. His songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, ranging from Dionne Warwick to Michael Bolton to Barbara Mandrell - including “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You,” the 1990 BMI Song of the Year.

This exciting performance will feature songs written by each member over the span of their careers as well as a few twists on some Holiday favorites. Tickets for this special event are available for $20.

Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad is a refreshing mix of comedy, music, spoken-word and show-stopping burlesque, featuring the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah, featuring performers seen on Comedy Central, HBO and Late Night TV.

These badass chosen chicks boldly dare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt in a fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza. “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen” gets remixed, Tumbalaika gets a makeover and we all find out what’s in Gefilte Fish (think “Fear Factor” for Jews!)

Phenomenal Week!

What an amazing week for entertainment it was at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts!

On Tuesday, the 11th our stage featured the phenomenal production of “In The Mood” by the “String Of Pearls” orchestra under the direction of Bud Forrest complete with the “In The Mood” singers and dancers. Specially formulated as a tribute to our armed forces in celebration of Veteran’s Day, this retro 1940’s style musical production was simply spectacular! The practically sold out house went wild with applause throughout the show.

Not only was the orchestra astounding, the singing and dancing was simply top-notch! Particularly moving was the finale, where the cast, dressed in authentic period military costume, performed each song of every branch of the armed forces while requesting that both active and retired service personal stand and be recognized. Many in the audience were brought to tears during the moving tribute.

Then, on Saturday the 15th, the stage was set for Eve Ensler’s provocative and liberating play, “The Vagina Monologues”. Wonderfully directed by Fay Jacobs and expertly performed by Washington, DC based veteran stage performers Jane Bruns, Stacey Fearheiley and Eloise Ullman, the production truly entertained the diverse and appreciative audience during both productions. Look forward to more great productions to be directed by Fay here on our stage!

Finally, on Sunday the 16th, the RBTA rolled out the red carpet for a fascinating look into radio news journalism as nationally renowned NPR journalists Neal Conan (senior host of Talk of the Nation) and Liann Hansen (senior host of Weekend Edition) spoke on our stage for a informative look into current events and life behind the scenes at National Public Radio. Over 250 attendees were privy to the event and all had the chance to meet the famed husband and wife team at a warm reception for the two courtesy of Ovations restaurant and lounge. It was truly a special event that thrilled both the featured speakers and the guests. Many thanks to Public Radio Delmarva (WSCL 89.5 and WSDL 90.7) for their tremendous work and support with this event as well as Dogfish Brewery in Milton and South Pacific Florists in Rehoboth for their generous donations!

Tickets are already selling well for the encore presentation of The Vagina Monologues, coming back to Rehoboth this fall at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts

The Fay J. Productions presentation of The Vagina Monologues, which sold out amid rave reviews at the Convention Center in 2005, returns on Nov. 15 for two special performances at the new Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts located at 20 Baltimore Avenue.

Washington based, veteran performers Jane Bruns, Stacey Fearheiley and Eloise Ullman will reprise their roles for an evening of laughter and tears in Eve Ensler’s award winning play during the two performances scheduled for 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM on the RBTA stage.

In January 2005, 900 people saw the show, directed by Fay Jacobs. The diverse audiences of men and women, gay and straight, young and not so young, gave standing ovations to the production as it raised funds for programs to prevent violence against women.

“It’s great to see that caliber of a performance, “said Cape Gazette publisher Dennis Forney. “…provocative and liberating, the rafters were shaking at times with the riotous laughter.”

The Vagina Monologues grew out of interviews the author had with more than three hundred women ages six to seventy-six. The results are stunning, with stories ranging from an older woman's memory of her first experience with her sexuality to an account by a Bosnian refugee to a hilarious discussion of…well, you’ll just have to come see! The inspiring, hilarious, moving and thought-provoking monologues that compose the play have sold out houses all over the world.

New Orleans’ Jazz Great Bryan Lee at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts
New Orleans’ Blues institution to appear in Rehoboth for one night only

Bryan Lee and the Blues Power Band, a New Orleans Blues institution, will be performing in Rehoboth for one night only on Thursday, October 23 at 8:00 PM at the new Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts at 20 Baltimore Avenue.
Hosted by renowned Jazz aficionado Sydney Arzt, formerly of Sydney’s Blues and Jazz Restaurant, the Jazz/Blues Thursday evening series continues with one of her favorite performers – Bryan Lee and the Blues Power Band. "I really like how he mixes funk, a little country and some good ol’ rock’n‘roll riffs into the Blues," Arzt enthusiastically stated.

Bryan played at the Old Absinthe Bar, (located on Bourbon Street in New Orleans) for 15 years during the 80’ and 90’s. Shows like Bryan’s at the famous spot went a long way in establishing New Orleans as a blues town as well as the “granddaddy” of jazz towns.

Today, Lee and the Blues Power Band are still going strong, thrilling audiences across the US, Canada and Europe. Blind since birth, Bryan continues his life-long love of music and performing for his loyal fans. "I believe that I have a gift that makes people smile and I want to share that," stated Lee.

Here's a big thanks to all of the concert attendees who came by the RBTA last Saturday evening to catch the phenomenal Viki Dee and Eddie Sal in "Viki Dee and Friends". It was a spectacular event! Look for more Viki Dee performances on our beautiful stage in the upcoming season.

Next on the agenda is the celebrated Latin Soul band "CINTRON"! ” CINTRON will be our featured guest for the legendary Rehoboth Beach Autumn Jazz Festival"!

Formed by the legendary jazz percussionist Edgardo Cintron and producer/vocalist Rocco DePersia, (together with 16 high octane musicians from around the globe), CINTRON blends Caribbean Rhythms with dance friendly Latin Jazz, crossover Latin Pop, bilingual salsa, and old-school R&B into a vibrant live performance you won’t soon forget!

Acclaimed Emmy Award winning comedian and actor Leslie Jordan hits the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts stage on September 11th and 12th, 2008.

At 8:00 PM on Thursday, September 11, 2008, and Friday, September 12, the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts at 20 Baltimore Avenue is proud to present the acclaimed, Emmy Award winning comedian Leslie Jordan as he performs his newest one-man show, My Trip Down the Pink Carpet, a hilarious, and sometimes moving, documentation from his trip from being a closeted boy in Chattanooga, to the "gayest man I know" in Holly¬wood, Calif..

Jordan won an Emmy as the caustic closet case Beverly Leslie on “Will & Grace” and became a cult icon through his role as Brother Boy in the film “Sordid Lives”. The diminutive actor with the distinctive Southern drawl has appeared in several other well known television programs such as "Hearts Afire," "Boston Legal," "Will & Grace" and more. Jordan also has two television projects in the can, one for Logo and another for HBO. For the LOGO network, he’ll reprise his Sordid Lives film role, “Brother Boy,” for “Sordid Lives: The Series” which also features Olivia Newton-John, Caroline Rhea, and Rue McClanahan.

While the actor normally maintains a hectic schedule, for now, Jordan’s one-man show is his primary focus. Frank about some of the darker paths he’s taken in life, including his past drug and alcohol addiction—and his subsequent sobriety—Jordan maintains the uncanny ability to spin his personal trials into comic genius. “Once I got into recovery – I’m 10 years sober from alcohol, and crystal meth was my big problem – around the recovery rooms we share, and there’s great power in that, with sitting with groups of people, and people that you trust,” he said. “That’s the way we stay sober, is we put it out there – we believe you’re only as sick as your secrets.”

The Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts will present two performance of “My Trip Down the Pink Carpet” with each show beginning at 8:00 PM on Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th. Last weekend was filled with busy excitement at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts. On Saturday morning, we took a short and scenic drive to the grand opening of the spectacular new club house at Independence (Ocean Atlantic’s Premier Active Adult Community, located on Route 5 approximately 15 minutes from the resort towns of Rehoboth Beach and Lewes).

Throngs of people were at the event which was expertly catered by our very own Ovations Restaurant.

Each person that we spoke to about the theatre received our information eagerly and several turned up at the theatre for Saturday’s and Sunday’s performances of Broadway Fever.

After returning to the theatre at around 2:00, we quickly switched gears to set up the impressive portico and patio area of the Celebration Mall for a Community Appreciation Fest sponsored by the HRC. Hundreds of people showed up at that fun filled event as well. The event was a great success featuring some spectacular food catered by a variety of fantastic restaurants and gourmet food shops including, Dish, Shag, Good For You Gourmet, Beautiful Foods and more.

Then at 8:00, as is the case every Thursday - Sunday through the end of August, the curtain rose on our smash hit Broadway Fever. We were fortunate enough to have had professional photographer Dan Cook who was covering Ovations and Broadway Fever for an article in the Cape Gazette.

Dan really has a fantastic eye and is a well known and respected photographer in Delmarva. We're looking forward, not only to the upcoming Cape Gazette article, but to working with Dan in the future on other RBTA events. Here are a couple of examples of Dan's work from that evening.

Welcome to the official blog of the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts! As you may have read from our profile on the right side of the page, we are the exciting newest edition to the ever-evolving downtown district of scenic Rehoboth Beach, Delaware bringing dynamic live entertainment to the shore.

My name is Michael Sprouse. I'm the Associate Director of RBTA and I'll be updating and moderating this blog frequently so as to keep you current with all that we have to offer at the Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts. And do we have a lot! Once look at our 2008 Theatrical Production Schedule from our web site (http://rehobothbeachtheatre.com/events.htm) will confirm that.

Currently, we are in the middle of a two month run of the famed Weber-Prianti production of "Broadway Fever" which taps into the exciting repertoire of Tony award winning Broadway shows including: 42nd Street, No No Nanette, Jekyll & Hyde, Footloose, Chicago & Wicked, honoring the composers and choreographers who have made their mark in Broadway history!

The show truly is dynamic and audience members at the theatre have been thrilled based upon their comments after the show. The show runs close to two hours with a 15 minute intermission. The show presents a chronological history of Broadway with Act I composed of classic song & dance routines as well as burlesque skits covering the 1890's through the 1930's. Some of these great classics include 42nd Street, Give My Regards to Broadway, Your Feet's too Big, The Charleston and more. Act II begins with some popular 1950's era numbers and gracefully glides into present day with show stopping numbers from Wicked, Rent, The Little Mermaid, Hairspray and much more.

The all professional cast is so well versed in the nuances of this show (each having established a long working history with Weber-Prinati productions) that each number performed carries it's own unique character and spark that can only be delivered by talent that has risen far above merely rote song and dance routines.

Production dates of this show will run through the end of August. Curtain for "Broadway Fever" is at 8:00 PM each Thursday - Sunday evening. This really is a must see show and you won't regret adding it to your "fun things to do at the beach" list now through the end of August!
